Woman To Woman
Jerusalem Shelter for Battered Women
Sari was born in Israel and became engaged at a very young age to escape a cruel father. She soon learned that her husband-to-be was even worse, with a criminal record for attempted murder. Although she dreaded marrying him, she was too frightened to refuse. After four years of violence and abuse, she feared for her life and for the lives of her children. With the help of her sister, she contacted social services, and the next day fled with her children to the Jerusalem Shelter for Battered Women.
Founded in 1982, the Jerusalem Shelter assists women like Sari escape from a cycle of abuse and build a violence-free future. The Shelter provides immediate shelter, food, childcare, healthcare, clothing, toiletries, and sundry needs, in addition to practical and psychological counseling through individual and group therapy. A Halfway House eases clients back into the community, and ongoing counseling and assistance are available thereafter. Approximately 100 women and 150 children are assisted each year.
The Shelter runs a Children’s Center, attended year-round by children living in the Shelter and by children in the Halfway House during the holidays, when school is not in session. In addition, there is a Legal Aid program that provides continuous counseling and court representation for women in all stages of rescue, and an Empowerment Program, geared toward enabling women to eventually support themselves and achieve independence.
