Partnership 2000

A special relationship between the MetroWest Jewish community and Ofakim and Merchavim in Israel was established about 10 years ago as part of Partnership 2000. Since then the relationship has strengthened, thanks to the involvement of all parties and the commitment of the MetroWest community. Partnership projects foster excellence in education, culture, sports, and leadership development.

The town of Ofakim and the regional council of Merchavim lie next to each other in northwestern Negev – probably the least developed region in Israel, with socio-economic problems including unskilled residents, education and integration of immigrants from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia, high unemployment, an ineffective educational system, and poverty affecting all aspects of life.

To meet the needs of the residents of the region, the MetroWest Jewish community has established programs such as:

  • Heznek: About 330 high school students are tutored and take supplementary classes with college students as teaching assistants, school teachers teaching extra hours, parents participating in an annual workshop, and school staff required to manage the technical and logistical aspects of the program. Your endowment gift of $1,250,000 will ensure the continuation of this program that makes such a difference for so many children.
  • Alei Negev: Courses for caregivers of special-needs and mentally disabled people, soon to be recognized as a professional training course by the Ministry of Labor and Welfare. Trainees commit to stay to work in the new Southern Aleh Rehabilitative Village. Your endowment of $1,000,000 will be a lead gift to ensure the continuation and expansion of this vital program.

A gift of $10,000,000 will endow all of Partnership 2000 and ensure that the MetroWest community will always have the resources it needs to empower vulnerable populations in Israel.
