A Hot Meal for Pupils in Ofakim
The city of Ofakim, with 24,000 residents, is located northwest of Beersheva in the Negev Desert. Sadly, while nearly 20 percent of Israelis live below the poverty line, the figure in Ofakim is 250 percent higher. Of its 6,000 families, about 2,500 depend upon welfare. Ha’aretz, in an article written in 2004, called Ofakim the “poorest locale in Israel.”
No wonder the UJC MetroWest has invested so much effort and money to aid in the development of Ofakim and its economy. UJC works to improve the quality of life there through innovative educational, social and cultural programs with an emphasis on children and youth.
In an effort to improve quality of life in Ofakim, the Meir Panim Soup Kitchen is establishing a kitchen in Kiryat Gat, a gateway to the Negev, which will serve as the hot meal distribution center for the southern regions of the country. From this site, children in Ofakim kindergartens and schools will receive delivery of hot meals daily. Every child – regardless of need – will receive the same hot meal. If a family cannot afford to pay, Meir Panim will subsidize all or part of the cost. Decisions about funding will be made discretely and in total confidence to maintain the dignity of the family and to protect the child.
