Operation Atzmaut

Operation Atzmaut was piloted by United Jewish Communities of MetroWest NJ in conjunction with the city of Rishon LeZion, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, and the Ethiopian-Israeli community. The project helps Ethiopian-Israeli families in Rishon LeZion reduce their dependence on welfare and move towards greater self-sufficiency and integration into Israeli society.

The program works with more than 80 Ethiopian-Israeli families on a wide range of levels, including family management skills, vocational training and job placements for parents, supplementary educational help, and enrichment programs for children.

Each participating family in Operation Atzmaut is guided by an Ethiopian-Israeli case manager who offers them mentoring, professional support, and practical assistance. Due to the great success of the pilot program in Rishon LeZion, the program is now being replicated in five more locations around Israel, in partnership with other American federations, and is seen as one of the important models for future expansion.
