JCF Funding Opportunity: Rachel Coalition Children’s Services

Rachel Coalition Children’s Services

Women who are beaten or otherwise abused by their husbands are not the only victims of domestic violence. Children who witness the abuse – and who are sometimes abused themselves – can be scarred for life. Services to help them overcome their family trauma are often critical to their mental health and to interrupting the cycle of violence.

When WS referred to the Rachel Coalition by the Irvington police last spring, she was a 38-year old mother of twin girls (age 10) and a 2-year old son. She had been married for 10 years and the marriage had been characterized by emotional, financial, and physical abuse. WS felt isolated and unable to deal with the terrible situation in which she lived.

WS spoke with Rachel’s licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), sensitive to the needs of domestic violence victims. In addition to advising WS of her rights, referring her to Rachel’s staff attorney, and arranging for counseling, the social worker made sure that the girls – affected by the violence in their home – could participate in Rachel’s children’s counseling group.

The Rachel Coalition Children’s Services maintains an average caseload of 28 unduplicated clients. Your contribution in any amount will be greatly appreciated and will help support a dedicated LCSW to provide counseling and support for these emotionally needy children. A gift of $6,250 will support the service for one month; $75,000 for one year. Appropriate recognition opportunities will be discussed with the donor.
