Earthquake relief efforts underway; Emergency Mailbox Opened to Provide Relief to Those in Need The Community Relations Committee of United Jewish Communities of MetroWest NJ has opened an emergency mailbox to collect funds for relief efforts following last Wednesday’s earthquake in Southern Peru. The earthquake, which had a magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:41 p.m. (7:41 p.m. ET). To date, at least 17,000 have been displaced, over 1,500 people have been injured, and the death toll has risen to over 500 people. The Community Relations Committee routinely responds to emergency and disaster situations around the world and works to galvanize support from the MetroWest community to demonstrate the Jewish values of tikkun olam (repair of the world) and g’milut chasidim (acts of loving kindness).
