The storm killed more than 3,100 people, injured more than 3,300 and left at least 1,000 people missing. Thousands of homes have been flattened and 650,000 people have been evacuated from the area, while the list of victims continues to grow. Click here for a JDC situation report.
UJC MetroWest is working through the national UJC umbrella, which represents a continental federation system whose collective power makes an extraordinary impact on our global Jewish community and beyond, whenever and wherever the need, in collaboration with our partner agencies.
In the wake of the Southeast Asia tsunami, the UJC and the Jewish Federation system raised some $10 million for the JDC's $18 million-plus relief effort. At the national level, UJC spearheaded a $28.5 million aid effort for victims of Hurricane Katrina, in the process creating a blueprint for collective disaster relief. And most recently, national UJC opened a mailbox for victims of the Southern California wildfires, raising more than $55,000 so far.
