JERUSALEM - The dovish Israeli Meretz Party has chosen veteran lawmaker Haim Oron as its new leader.

The Meretz Party advocates far-reaching Israeli concessions for peace with the Palestinians. The opposition party has five seats out of the 120 in the Israeli parliament.

Meretz is led now by Yossi Beilin. He was a main mover behind the so-called Geneva Accord, a draft peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinians. Dovish Israelis and moderate Palestinians signed it in 2003, but it remains unofficial.

Oron, the new leader, is 67 years old. He was first elected to the parliament since 1988.

The party chairman announced that Oron easily defeated two other Meretz lawmakers in a party primary on Tuesday.
