New Israeli-Palestinian poll shows scant support for peace talks

JERUSALEM - A new poll shows few Israelis or Palestinians support the peace talks between the sides.

The poll shows 53 percent of Israelis believe the peace talks now under way should be stopped. Only 39 percent say they support the talks.

Among Palestinians, opposition is even higher: 75 percent, with support at a mere 21 percent.

The poll also shows 84 percent of Palestinians supported a March 6 shooting attack by a Palestinian gunman in Jerusalem. That attack killed eight young students at a Jewish seminary.

On both sides, more than two-thirds believe the chances a Palestinian state will be established in the next five years are slim.

The poll published Tuesday was carried out by two think tanks, one Israeli and one Palestinian.
