Meeting Abbas, Israel's Barak promises new gestures for Palestinians

JERUSALEM - Israeli and Palestinian officials say Israel's defense minister has promised the Palestinian prime minister new gestures aimed at improving conditions in the West Bank.

Israel's defense ministry says Ehud Barak promised Salam Fayyad to "move ahead with moves to make life easier for the Palestinian population" as long as they don't threaten Israel's security. The men met Wednesday in Tel Aviv.

In recent days, Barak has said Israel would allow Palestinian security forces to get new equipment, and would make it easier for Palestinians to move through checkpoints. The moves are meant to bolster Fayyad's moderate government. Barak refuses to pull down checkpoints, a key Palestinian demand.

Fayyad's office says he demanded that Israel halt settlement activity and military incursions into Palestinian cities.
