BERLIN - Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has canceled his trip next week to Germany, the Israeli Embassy in Berlin said Thursday.

Embassy spokesman Aaron Segui has said he cannot comment on the reason for the visit's postponement, but Barak's spokesman, Ronen Moshe, said the visit was canceled because of a work overload.

He downplayed recent media reports in the Middle East of tensions between Israel and Syria, following a flurry of recent attacks and retaliation threats that have raised fears of a possible new round of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

A senior Defense Ministry official, Amos Gilad, told Army Radio in Israel that the visit was postponed due to scheduling problems.

"There's no reason for the heavy tension that the headlines create, which is based on reports in the Arab press," Gilad said.

The embassy on Thursday morning said no new date for a visit has been set.

Barak had planned to meet his German counterpart, Franz Josef Jung, to discuss security developments in the Middle East, as well as a closer cooperation between the two countries.
