JERUSALEM - An Israeli official says that Housing and Construction Minister Zeev Boim will next week approve the construction of hundreds of housing units in the West Bank.
Roi Lachmanovitch, a spokesman for the Shas religious party, says that Boim will on Sunday approve construction in the Beitar Illit settlement near Jerusalem, and other areas. Shas is a member of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's coalition.
Lachmanovitch says Boim committed to the construction recently in a conversation with Shas leaders. Shas' announcement Wednesday came hours before U.S. President George W. Bush was slated to arrive in Israel to prod Israel and the Palestinians to negotiate a peace deal.
The Palestinians demand in the talks that Israel stop building in areas they want for a future state.
