Israeli police say local lawyer slain in Tel Aviv car bomb blast

JERUSALEM - A car bomb blast in central Tel Aviv killed a prominent Israeli lawyer, police said, in what they called a criminal bombing, not an attack by Palestinian militants.

At the scene of the bombing, Tel Aviv police chief Ilan Franco told reporters, "The incident was apparently a crime-linked attack." He added, "It is a very grave incident." The shattered SUV stood on the left side of the road, apparently rolling across the street after the blast.

Israeli media identified the dead lawyer as Yoram Hacham, 53, from Tel Aviv, after police permitted publication of his name. A gag order was clamped on the investigation.

Media reports said that Hacham represented some of the most notorious figures in Israel's underworld. The reports said he was also involved in a legal battle with one of his former clients.

In past years, Tel Aviv has been the target of many Palestinian bombing attacks, but recent blasts have been attributed to the local underworld.
