A couple of weeks ago, Hamas declared an end to the six-month “lull” in its firing of rockets against southern Israel, a temporary cease-fire that had been brokered by Egypt.
In the previous eight years, over 10,000 rockets have been launched against Israeli population centers. With each rocket aimed at a civilian target, Israelis have literally 15 seconds to run for cover.
Israel finally had no choice but to respond: to stop the rockets Hamas has been firing and destroy the tunnels Hamas has used to smuggle sophisticated weapons into Gaza from the Sinai.
Israel has been making every attempt to respond to Hamas only and avoid civilian casualties. They are leafleting areas about to be attacked, making over 100,000 cell phone calls to Palestinians, and warning them to leave. The Israelis are sending food, medical aid, and supplies into Gaza.
Throughout this period, Hamas has intensified its attacks on Israel’s civilian populations — almost 100 rockets were fired against Israel just on December 25, Christmas Day.
In order to address needs in Israel arising from Hamas rocket attacks, the UJC/ Federation System of North America is responding by launching a supplemental funding initiative of the United Jewish Appeal Campaign. The organization is committed to raising $10 million for the needs of the southern Israelis throughout the period of ongoing hostilities.
Your gift to the Israel Emergency Campaign (IEC) will go directly to Israel, to help nearly a million Israelis endure.
