5/28/2009 SUPPORT SECURITY ASSISTANCE FOR ISRAELUrge Passage of the Foreign Aid Bill FY10The Obama administration requested $2.775 billion in security assistance for Israel as part of the fiscal year 2010 foreign aid bill. This aid request reflects the second year of a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the United States and Israel in 2007 to gradually increase U.S. security assistance to Israel. This MOU was negotiated in order to meet the growing threats to Israel of a nuclear Iran and a more heavily armed Hezbollah, rocket attacks by Hamas, and conventional threats from Syria by boosting U.S. security assistance to Israel during the next decade. ACTION:Urge your Congressman to support funding for security assistance to Israel by ensuring passage of the FY 2010 foreign aid bill. Providing Israel with the means to defend itself is a sound tenet of American foreign policy. Strategically, Israel is a democratic, dependable U.S. ally in a highly volatile, but critical, region. By making sure that Israel remains strong, the United States helps to ensure the survival of a country that both reflects our values and advances our interests.
