MetroWest Community Stands for Freedom in Iran

On Thursday, September 24, 100 strong from the MetroWest community travelled en masse to the U.N., on busses provided by UJC MetroWest, to stand for freedom in Iran. Holding placards and shouting “Stop Iran Now,” members of our community stood together with members of dozens of others Jewish and Christian organizations, unions, and thousands of concerned citizens — to protest Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to speak at the U.N. General Assembly, his repressive policies, and, most of all, his aggressive anti-Israel rhetoric.

Speakers included Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel; New York State Governor David Paterson; former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani; New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli; New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr.; New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver; Stuart Appelbaum, president, Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union; and The Very Reverend Dr. James A. Kowalski, dean, Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine.

“Ahmadinejad is the Number One Holocaust denier in the world,” Elie Wiesel said, and demanded that world leaders shun him. “He’s unworthy of your attention; he’s unworthy of being your colleague. He’s in fact an enemy of humanity.”

Our collective voices helped reinforce the message that Iran is an immediate and deadly threat to the entire world, and that Iran must be stopped before it has the capability of building and deploying nuclear weapons.
