Midler, Seinfeld, Biden headline Jewish museum opening

Philadelphia (JTA) — Vice President Joe Biden, Jerry Seinfeld and Bette Midler headlined a festive opening weekend for the new National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. The gala events marked the culmination of a decade-long, $150 million effort to move from a small space adjoining a synagogue to an impressive structure situated in the center of historic Philadelphia, near the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and the Constitution Center, the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent reported. more

"Max"imum Potential — A UJC Blog
Max Kleinman shares his thoughts about what's important to the MetroWest community.
Max Kleinman The Problem with Containment — Part II
As stated in last week’s blog, more and more policymakers in Washington, D.C. have given up on preventing Iran from going nuclear. Instead, they will rely on a policy of containment, which worked well during the “Cold War.” Unfortunately, any parallel with the Cold War ignores the many dissimilarities between that era and the unique dangers presented by a nuclear-armed Iran.   more
What's your #ish?

Being Jewish means something different to everyone.
Whatever it means to you is your #ish. And sharing yours makes a difference.

The "What's Your #ish?" campaign invites people to describe what being Jewish means to them by posting their definition, their "ish," on Facebook or Twitter. By adding teh "#" symbol to each "ish," the posts will be linked on a new site especially for this campaign called whatsyourish.com. For every definition, a quarter goes towards the #ish fund. So Facebook it. Tweet it. Tag it with #ish. Visit whatsyourish.com.

Leslie Dannin Rosenthal My Mother-in-Law — My Inspiration as a Jewish Woman Leader
In the last few months, I’ve written a little bit about my mother-in-law, Ethel Rosenthal, and I’m sad to report that I must now say my mother-in-law of blessed memory. I wrote about her last in the context of Shavuot and the story of Ruth and Naomi. I was so lucky to have Ethel as my mother-in-law — she was an inspiration to me as a Jewish woman leader, and as a Jewish woman, period.   more

A personal view of our efforts in Israel from Amir Shacham, UJC MetroWest Director of Israel Operations
Amir Shacham Saba Avram
I was recently stuck in Europe under a volcano cloud with millions of people and my own older parents. The closed sky caught us in Hungary with all its painful Jewish history, a week after their national elections in which a far right party won much power, a few days after Yom Hashoa (Holocaust remembrance day) and symbolically during Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli memorial and independence days).   more
