MetroWest is Looking for (More Than) a Few Good Volunteers
by Gary Aidekman, President
We all know how much good can be achieved by a few good people doing the right thing — how much they can change the lives of so many who need their help. MetroWest is filled with more than a few good people. We are a wealth of talent, dedication, and the intention to benefit others.
Do you have experience, expertise, or interest in a particular field? Are you looking for something meaningful to do with your extra time? Would you like to find a place to put your experience to good use, a place that matches your interests while also benefitting the MetroWest Jewish community? Well, look no further.
UJC MetroWest, in collaboration with our partner agencies, has created the Jewish Volunteer Network that features a central website where volunteer opportunities throughout the MetroWest community are posted. Are you available one or more days a week? We have a volunteer opportunity for you. Have only an hour or two a week to spare? We have a volunteer opportunity for you as well.
The Jewish Volunteer Network welcomes adults and teens, who have their own special section — JTEEN — where they can connect to find volunteer opportunities and other teen programs offered through our beneficiary agency, The Partnership for Jewish Learning and Life.
Giving back to the community while doing something you enjoy is such a great way to make a difference. It fulfills one of the most important Jewish values — areyvut — Jewish mutual responsibility. By caring about the well-being of fellow Jews, wherever they are and whatever they need, a person who performs areyvut enables the Jewish community to thrive and inspires others to do the same. Now it is easier than ever to make a difference in your Jewish community through a volunteer job that matches your interests and availability.
So, whether you have a background as an accountant, administrative assistant, educator, grant writer, graphic designer or tutor, or if your expertise is in computers, data entry or public relations, know that you and your enthusiasm will make a difference. Please take a few minutes to check out the Jewish Volunteer Network and view all of the volunteer opportunities waiting to be filled by someone with special talents and dedication, someone just like you. Then select the one (or more) that really speaks to you. When we work together, everything is possible.

The Thrill of Discovery
by Ken Heyman
One of the most gratifying aspects of a relationship is the pleasure of discovering something new just when you thought you knew everything about the other party. What I did not know was the breadth and scope of JCF's work in so many facets of our community, and I imagine that I am not alone in this. >>more
Working Together We All Win
by Dr. Jonathan Woocher
I've had the privilege over the past several years of serving on MetroWest's Day School Council, which helps to oversee the Federation and Jewish Community Foundation's efforts to help our three day schools thrive both financially and educationally. Because of my involvement with Jewish education nationally, I can testify that one of the areas where the MetroWest Jewish community leads the continent is in the extent of cooperation and collaboration among our day schools. >>more
The Only Difference that Matters is the Difference You Make in Another's Life
by Rachel Cooper
At Camp Deeny Riback, the only difference that matters is the difference you make in another's life. This concept did not hit home for me until my final day as a CDR camper this past August. Having grown up at "CDR" — I always knew camp was special, even different from other summer camps, but I could never put it in words. And then, something magical happened, I got "it" — and I owe this seeming "realization" to the experiences I had as a 9th and 10th grader in Camp Deeny Riback's Leader-in-Training (L.I.T.) program. >>more
The New Faces of Poverty
by Reuben D. Rotman
We are now two years into what has been called "the worst recession since the Great Depression." Banks have collapsed, corporations have declared bankruptcy, and unemployment has reached record levels. For many in our MetroWest community, what was initially assumed to be a temporary loss of income has turned into long-term unemployment and significant changes in personal lifestyles. >>more
Optimism about the Future of American Jewish Identification with Israel
by Rabbi Alan Silverstein
A recent study entitled "Beyond Distancing: young Adult American Jews and Their Alienation from Israel" by Steven M. Cohen and Ari Y. Kelman purports to document "a growing distance from Israel of [non-Orthodox] American Jews [that] seems to be most pronounced among younger Jews." On the basis of this research, Jewish communal leaders have begun to despair about the future of the connection between the two largest and most essential Jewish communities in the world. >>more
