The Turkish government announced their plans to draft Jewish high school students into the Turkish army.
JEWS HELD IN DETAINMENT CAMPS ALLOWED TO ENTER ISRAEL, 1945
1,310 Jews, held in British detainment camps on the island of Mauritius were allowed to enter into Israel. Mauritius was used by the British to detain Jewish refugees fleeing Europe and trying to enter Israel. About 1,500 people including 621 women and 116 children were forcibly transferred to the island, 22 of them dying from disease on the way.
ISRAELI WINS BRONZE MEDAL IN POLE VAULT, 1999
Alex Abrabuch, an immigrant from the Former Soviet Union, won a bronze medal in the pole vault during the world championship in Seville, Spain.
PM BARAK: BALL IS IN ARAFATS' COURT, 2000
After the Camp David Summit, Prime Minister Ehud Barak said that the ball was now in Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's court. Barak said that if Arafat was not ready to move towards a settlement, he must bear the responsibility for a possible deadlock.
