Partnership 2000 March in the Negev Attracts Thousands

Drawing the public's attention to the outrageously high rate of car accidents in Israel, the Negev communities of Ofakim and Merchavim -- under the auspices of Partnership 2000 -- staged a march of solidarity on this important issue. Minister Matan Vilnai represented the government and was joined by the mayors of Ofakim and Marchavim, U.S. Partnership 2000 representatives from MetroWest, New Jersey as well as thousands of children, new olim, soldiers and community residents.

The 13 km walk ended at Ofakim's beautiful national park with a festive gathering including dance and acrobatic performances, prizes, speeches and free Partnership 2000 t-shirts. In addition, a special anthem -- soon to be translated into English -- was created for the occasion.

This march was the third in a series of annual events organized by Partnership 2000 in the region to highlight issues of national concern. Last year, the theme was solidarity for the Israeli MIAs.

Funded by United Jewish Communities (UJC) and implemented in cooperation with the Jewish Agency for Israel, Partnership 2000 links U.S. Jewish communities with Israeli cities and regions. The community relationships are based on real partnership -- with both sides contributing for the mutual benefit of all. The Negev towns of Ofakim and Merchavim are partnered with MetroWest and Bergen County, New Jersey.
