Harry Lindeman, who has been giving to UJA for 56 years, was inspired by the commitment of his father and grandfather to the Jewish community. Both served as president of their synagogue, where Lindeman has been a member his entire life. He is now 85.
"When I first paid dues to the temple, it was only $18," he observed.
Lindeman and his wife, Irene, were both born in Newark. He recalls participating in activities at the Y there and has fond memories of the shows on Sunday night.
Israel is important to Lindeman. He has visited it and has a personal connection through a close boyhood friend – a refugee from Nazi Germany who went to school with Lindeman and afterwards emigrated to Israel.
When asked why he has given to UJA for so many years, Lindeman replied simply, "I figured it was my duty to help take care of Jews in need."
