Yom Kippur War spurred UJA giving

"In October 1973, I was sitting in Yom Kippur services, at the Irvington synagogue where I had been a bar-mitzvah 12 years before, when I was stunned by the announcement that the Arab armies had invaded Israel on this most sacred and solemn of days," recalled Jerry Baranoff.

A member of the congregation rose and said that "Israel should not only be in our hearts at this time, but in our wallets as well. It was only one year after the completion of my schooling and I had never contributed to the UJA before. I immediately responded to this emergency by sending $50 (about one day's pay at the time) to the Israel Emergency Fund of UJA. And so I was embarked."

From that time, Baranoff, president of Daughters of Israel, West Orange, continued giving to the United Jewish Appeal of MetroWest NJ every year. He is now a member of Ner Tamid (Eternal Light) Achievers, which recognizes those who have contributed to UJA's annual campaign for 25 years or more.

If you, like Jerry Baranoff, have given to UJA for 25 years or more, the Jewish Community Foundation of MetroWest would like to recognize you as a Ner Tamid Achiever, with a listing on the Ner Tamid honor roll and invitations to special events. If you are already a Ner Tamid Achiever, JCF encourages you to share your thoughts and feelings about UJA at .
