Ner Tamid couple celebrate 55th anniversary

When Gloria and Martin Sherman moved to their home 49 years ago, the area was all farm country. Some years later, they joined a newly formed synagogue, where they have been members for over 40 years and where they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary at temple services.

Many things have changed over the years. The farms are gone. Their three children have grown up and moved away. But some things have remained the same, such as their commitment to their Jewish heritage, Israel, and charitable giving.

For more than 25 years, the Shermans have contributed to United Jewish Appeal of MetroWest NJ annually, qualifying them for membership in Ner Tamid (Eternal Light) Achievers, which honors the long-term commitment of UJA donors.

Gloria didn't remember exactly when they first began giving to UJA, but it was well over a quarter-century ago. Asked what motivated their lasting commitment, she replied, "First of all, we're Jewish, and I think it behooves all of us to support UJA, if we want the Jewish community to continue for our children and grandchildren. If we don't help ourselves, who will?"

Both Israel and the local community are important to the Shermans. They have been to Israel twice and look forward to future trips. "You could go 20 times and not see everything!" she exclaimed. They have family and friends in Tel Aviv, with whom they keep in close touch.

While they give to many charities, UJA holds a special place in their hearts. "We don't give tremendous amounts," said Gloria, "but if everyone gave, that would certainly mean a lot."

If you, like Gloria and Martin Sherman, have given to UJA for 25 years or more, the Jewish Community Foundation of MetroWest would like to recognize you as a Ner Tamid Achiever, with a listing on the Ner Tamid honor roll and invitations to special events. If you are already a Ner Tamid Achiever, JCF encourages you to share your thoughts and feelings about UJA at .
