CHIEF RABBIS ASK BRITIAN TO HALT ARAB CONSTRUCTION NEAR THE WESTERN WALL, 1929

Chief rabbis met with the British high commissioner, Harry Luke, in an effort to stop Arab building near the Western Wall holy site. Luke explained that he was unable to halt the construction.

MAPAI WINS 21ST ZIONIST CONGRESS, 1939

The 21st Zionist Congress elections in the Yeshuv (pre-state Israel) resulted in a victory for Mapai (Palestine Labor Congress).

BRITIAN PROPOSES REGIONAL AUTONOMY FOR JEWS AND ARABS, 1946

The Morrison-Gardy Plan was published. It proposed regional autonomy for the Jewish and Arab populations in mandated Palestine. Britain was to retain control of the country.

JERUSALEM LAW IS PASSED, 1980

The Knesset (Israel's Parliament) passed the Jerusalem Law, which confirmed Jerusalem's status as the capital of Israel. Countries that had embassies in Jerusalem transferred them to Tel Aviv in protest.

Eleven people were killed and more than 140 were injured when two bombs exploded in Jerusalem's outdoor market Machane Yehuda.
