Fixed-up JCC has new hours, fee structure
NJJN Staff Writer

It’s hard to conceive amid bare floors, unpainted walls, and the cacophony of power tools, but the $22 million renovation of the Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC, Ross Family Campus, in West Orange is nearing completion.

Walking through the hard-hat zones, JCC MetroWest marketing director Karen Edelstein pointed out the as yet unfinished areas: a new atrium, a kosher cafe featuring wireless Internet connection, and the highlight: a new 9,000-square-foot fitness center — three times larger than the pre-renovation facility.

In addition to the modernized workout space, there will be revamped locker rooms (see accompanying story), two exercise studios, a physical therapy suite, and new baby-sitting and early childhood development rooms.

There will also be, beginning Jan. 1, expanded hours, a new fee structure, and new rates and policies at the fitness centers in the West Orange JCC and at the Lautenberg Family JCC of Greater Morris in Whippany. Under the new policy, members of the Cooperman JCC fitness center may use the exercise facilities at the Whippany center, but the Lautenberg JCC fitness center members will no longer be able to work out in West Orange.

The Lautenberg JCC fitness center will also see significant changes, although not as extensive as those in West Orange. The first phase of changes at Whippany — which includes new carpeting, paint, and audio/video equipment — is expected to be completed by Dec. 31. The second phase will upgrade the existing aerobics studio and convert an additional two rooms to exercise studios. In addition, the mezzanine will be converted into space for personal training sessions.

Idan Levin, project manager for the renovations, said upgrades for the Whippany locker rooms would probably have to wait until after the “busy season” the first three months of the year, when New Year’s resolutions spike attendance.

“For us to go in at this time and start demolishing half the locker rooms, I don’t think that will do justice to our members,” said Levin, who estimated work would begin around Passover in April.

Edelstein said the cost of the Whippany renovations was not yet finalized.

“We are improving the facility, the content, the quality of the services,” Levin said. “We are also investing in our staff. If we want the better member experience, it starts with the staff…. It’s not just fresh paint and other pieces of equipment. It’s a complete picture.”

“Some of the service changes have already been put into effect,” Edelstein noted. All current group exercise, such as aerobics and cycling classes, are now included in membership, but a new slate of specialized classes will cost extra.

Beginning Jan. 1, both fitness centers will stay open one hour later on Saturday; on Sundays, the facilities will open an hour earlier and remain open an hour later.

The new fee structure is an attempt to “unbundle” charges for those who use the facilities for different activities.

“JCC members want a payment structure that reflects how they use the facilities,” Edelstein said. “Not every JCC member uses the health clubs. We’ve basically unbundled things. If you are only interested in participating in programs like school, camps, classes, and events, there’s [a separate] program membership; you’re welcome at both facilities.”

Annual family program memberships will cost $252. The JCC will offer a separate “center membership” for the fitness centers, which include the gymnasiums, track, pools, and, in West Orange, racquetball courts.

For many, Edelstein said, the new structure will mean lower dues, which have been “historically incredibly low” compared with area health clubs, such as New York Sports Club.

“The price for one individual there is $10 less than the price on an entire family here,” she said.

Members of the Whippany JCC who wish to use the fitness facilities will pay $51 per month for one adult, $68 for two adults in the same household, $58 for one adult plus children under 21, and $78 for two adults and children under 21. Seniors will pay $41 for one and $55 for two.

Higher prices for the West Orange JCC reflect more extensive renovations: $55 for one adult, $85 for two adults, $78 for one adult plus children under 21, $99 for two adults and children under 21, and $44 for one senior and $62 for two.

Youth center membership (grades K-12) is $29 at both facilities. All memberships include access to regular JCC programs.

As for curtailing the reciprocal relationship between the West Orange and Whippany fitness facilities, Edelstein said, fewer than 3 percent of members currently take advantage of the reciprocity.

Edelstein said the new fee structure offers greater flexibility and will give members the ability to change plans as their family situation warrants, as in the case where a child goes off to college.

“What they are getting for their money is nothing short of incredible value.”
