ACRE PRISON ESCAPE, 1909

In a daring escape, prisoners break of the Acre prison by means of ropes lowered from the roof. The police fail to apprehend eight of the escapees.

ARAB ATTACKS AND THE MODERNIZATION OF JERUSALEM, 1910

The Arabs of Qalqilya attack the village of Kfar Saba and demolish it. The sheep herd of the village of Yavne'el is stolen. The farmers and watchmen manage to retrieve it. The city of Jerusalem adopts a series of decisions aimed at municipal development including operating electric trams, laying a piped water system, installing a central drainage system, and introducing a municipal telephone service.

THE 13TH ZIONIST CONGRESS BEGINS, 1923

The 13th Zionist Congress begins in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia. A major topic is the establishment of an expanded Jewish Agency for Palestine.

BRITISH FORM JEWISH BATALLIONS, 1942

The British announce the formation of Jewish battalions to consist of the Buffs troops. 

HISTRADUT ELECTIONS LEAVE MAPAI IN POWER, 1944

Elections to the sixth Histradut ("Federation of Labor") convention result in the retention by Mapai of its majority by a narrow margin.

FIRST CHOIR FESTIVAL HELD IN JERUSALEM, 1952

The first Zimriyah (choir festival) opens in Jerusalem with dozens of participating choirs from Israel and abroad.

BEZEK GOES PRIVATE, 1991

The publicly owned Bezek Telecommunications company strikes over projected plans for privatization. The publicly owned electric company strikes as well.

ANOTHER TERROR ATTACK IN LEBANON, 1995

A terrorist attack on the I.D.F. in Southern Lebanon results in the death of a soldier. I.D.F. planes attack Hizbollah bases in response.
