Teen Scene: Life in a safe (?) country
Nadav Lobel

News reports worldwide show that the streets of Israel are full of terrorists, bombings, dangers, and tanks. People ask me: Is this really what happens on the door step of your house?

The answer is that the bombings, the Arab villages, the front line are all situated within about a 25-minute drive of the center of the country. So do people in Israel stay locked up in their homes? Absolutely not.

Although the situation in Israel involves danger, we don't feel threatened by it. Life in Israel definitely goes on, and there are many lively activities day and night. People go out to public places such as restaurants, cafés, and shopping centers. Teenagers use the bus to get from place to place such as the beach, which is full during this time of the year. On a Friday night, teenagers walk from one place to another easily because of the short distances between places, and many teenagers hang out in crowded areas - malls, parks, coffee shops, etc.

Even though life in Israel goes on, it is impossible to stay complacent about what goes on around you. So terror is a hot topic in the daily talks between people, and we worry when the army declares certain "dangers."

The bottom line is that life goes on.
